Introducing PRAN Consumer Mitra: Your Free First Step Toward Consumer Justice

There is a moment I see often in my practice. A consumer walks in months after their problem began — a builder who stopped answering calls, an insurer who rejected a claim without explanation, a bank that never resolved a dispute. They are not confused about whether something wrong happened to them. They are confused about what to do next.

By the time they reach me, they have often already lost something valuable: time, the right window to act, or the right forum. Not because they lacked a case, but because they lacked a starting point.

That gap — between "I have a problem" and "I know what to do about it" — is what PRAN Consumer Mitra is built to close.

"The first step in any consumer dispute shouldn't require a lawyer. It should just require clarity."

🧭 The Reality

The confusion before the complaint. Most consumers don't know, at the moment their dispute begins, whether they should approach RERA, a Consumer Commission, an Ombudsman, or a regulator — let alone which tier of which forum has jurisdiction over their claim. That single wrong turn can cost months.

⏳ The cost of not knowing. Delay is rarely neutral in consumer law. Evidence goes uncollected, limitation periods run out, and complaints filed in the wrong forum get sent back to square one. The people who can least afford to lose time are usually the ones losing the most of it.

What Consumer Mitra Actually Does

Consumer Mitra is a free, 24×7, no-login guided tool. You describe your issue across one of eight sectors — Builder/RERA, Banking, Insurance, Digital Fraud, E-Commerce, Medical, Aviation, or general Case Law — and it walks you through a short structured intake.

  • It identifies your likely forum — using the actual pecuniary thresholds under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 (District Commission up to ₹50 lakh, State Commission up to ₹2 crore, National Commission above that), alongside sector-specific first steps like the RBI Ombudsman for banking or the Insurance Ombudsman for claim disputes.
  • It generates a first-draft notice you can download and adapt — a starting point, not a final pleading.
  • It answers follow-up questions through a guided AI layer, scoped strictly to procedural guidance — timelines, documents, process steps. It is built to never offer an opinion on the merits of your specific case.

That last boundary is deliberate, and we want to be transparent about it: Consumer Mitra does not replace legal advice or representation. Where a matter needs detailed legal analysis, professional drafting, filing before a forum, or representation, it says so plainly and points you to PRAN's advocates, who take up such matters through the Consumer Justice Desk on a fee basis.

For matters needing legal analysis, drafting, filing, or representation — the Consumer Justice Desk, on a fee basis.

In short: free guidance to get you oriented, expert legal support when your matter genuinely needs it — and Consumer Mitra is honest with you about which one you need.

How You Can Help

  1. Try it — use Consumer Mitra on your own dispute, or a straightforward issue a friend or family member has been putting off.
  2. Share it — with anyone who has mentioned a builder delay, a rejected claim, or an unresolved bank complaint but hasn't known where to begin.
  3. Tell us what's wrong with it — this is a pilot. If a forum recommendation feels off, or a step in the flow doesn't make sense, write to us at pranfoundationindia@gmail.com.

Our Goal

  • ✦ A free, reliable first-response layer for every consumer in India, before they ever need to hire a lawyer
  • ✦ Faster, better-documented complaints reaching the correct forum on the first attempt
  • ✦ A responsible model for using AI in legal-aid work — clear at every step about what it can do, and equally clear about what it cannot
