Empowering Law for Healthier Food Systems: My Reflections from the Inaugural Food and Nutrition Legal Symposium in Asia

Empowering Law for Healthier Food Systems: My Reflections from the Inaugural Food and Nutrition Legal Symposium in Asia

By Amarjeet Singh, Advocate

In July 2024, the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) convened the Inaugural Food and Nutrition Legal Symposium in Asia — a landmark gathering that brought together legal experts, advocates, and policymakers from across the region. The event served as a powerful platform to explore how law and policy can drive healthier food environments and strengthen national nutrition governance.

I was honored to be among the participants representing India’s perspective on using legal and regulatory frameworks to advance public health and consumer protection. Engaging with regional peers reaffirmed my long-held belief that law is not merely a set of rules but a catalyst for justice, equity, and well-being.

🏛️ Law as a Foundation for Nutrition Policy

At the symposium, discussions revolved around the pressing need to address unhealthy food marketing to children, front-of-package labelling (FOPL), fiscal measures on sugary drinks, and the commercial determinants of health. These challenges, while complex, can be effectively mitigated through strong legal systems that safeguard public health interests against aggressive industry tactics.

From India’s experience with tobacco control laws, road safety regulations, and consumer protection reforms, it is clear that evidence-based legal action—backed by civil society engagement—can significantly reshape health outcomes. I shared insights on how such multi-sectoral strategies can be adapted to nutrition policy, ensuring healthier choices become easier and more affordable for all.

🌏 Building a Community of Legal Advocates for Public Health

One of the most inspiring aspects of the symposium was the diversity of voices — from Southeast Asia to South Asia — united by a common mission: to translate public health evidence into enforceable legal change.

The sessions showcased:

  • Success stories of nutrition law implementation across Asia,

  • Case studies demonstrating cross-sector collaboration, and

  • Innovative ways to counter corporate interference in health policymaking.

The symposium also emphasized the urgent need to build legal capacity in public health, empowering professionals to navigate complex intersections of trade, investment, and human rights law while advancing national nutrition agendas.

💡 Reflections and the Way Forward

The Food and Nutrition Legal Symposium reaffirmed my conviction that law is one of the most powerful instruments for social transformation. As I continue my work in public health law, consumer protection, and policy advocacy, I see immense potential for regional collaboration in developing model laws, advocacy tools, and legal networks that promote food justice and healthier societies.

This event was more than a conference—it was a call to action for all of us working at the intersection of law, health, and development to strengthen the legal foundations of public health across Asia.
