Indians run Google, Microsoft, IBM, Adobe… from Silicon Valley.
Indians run Google, Microsoft, IBM, and Adobe—from Silicon Valley. Meanwhile, back home, our IT giants make billions managing other people’s systems, but we don’t have a single Indian-owned social media platform, AI system, or global search engine. Every tweet, every video, every byte of data is controlled by foreigners. And yet we sit around debating app bans as if that’s a national strategy.
The consequences aren’t just about business—they’re about policy, economy, and national security. Foreign platforms can manipulate narratives, fuel protests, and even influence elections in a matter of hours. India ends up drafting reactive laws while sensitive citizen and government data sits on servers abroad, beyond our control. Billions of dollars flow out of the country because foreign-owned platforms capture the revenue, while Indian IT continues to generate cash but no global intellectual property or strategic assets. Startups struggle to scale globally because they depend on foreign infrastructure, and critical sectors like finance, defense, and communications remain vulnerable.
It’s time to wake up. Owning talent is not the same as owning technology. If we could send Chandrayaan to the Moon and make UPI a global benchmark, why can’t we build the next Google, TikTok, or Meta right here in India?
The solution is clear. India needs a Digital Sovereignty Mission. Our IT companies must stop just running code for others and start building global-scale products with IP ownership. The government must create an enabling ecosystem, regulate foreign platforms to prevent interference, enforce data localization and cybersecurity, and invest in public-private tech labs for AI, cloud, and semiconductors. Together, India can protect its democracy, own its data, and lead in global technology.
The question is simple: do we keep outsourcing our dreams, or do we finally own the future of technology?
